The Site

In an area of outstanding beauty, FOXCOVE CAMP SITE is set in mixed woodlands on the banks of the River Yealm. The coastline is un-spoilt and there is a small secluded cove giving access to the river.

Many wild birds, plants and animals live in the woods, which completely surround the campsite. Conservation of the site is of prior importance to the owners and the local authority.

Camping

The 10-acre site has three areas, which have been cleared and levelled for good camping. The sites are as follows :-

  1. Woodpecker Site – 5 Patrols
  2. Badger Site – 6 Patrols
  3. Squirrel Site – 4 Patrols

To reserve the whole site there must be a minimum of 50 campers.

Fires

Wood fires are permitted on the site and there is always plenty of wood for cooking. Altar fires are preferred and there are some on the site. Fallen timber may be collected from the woods but saws and axes must NOT be taken into the woodlands. DO NOT fell or deface trees. At the end of your camp place all un-burnt wood in the compound provided.

Campfires are to be confined to the designated area, which has log seats and a barbecue.

Water

Water taps are situated in the set kitchen areas. Water is metered drinking water so please avoid wastage, which can prove to be very expensive.

Toilets

A toilet / shower block is provided in the middle of the campsite within easy reach of all camping areas. It has cold water showers, wash basins, flush toilets and urinals.

Church

In a perfect setting for your "Scout’s Own", St Michael’s Chapel is on dedicated ground in an area surrounded on all sides by trees with gaps which over look the river. There is a stone altar and seating.

Building

Foxcove Hut (33’ X 16’) usually used together with Woodpecker site, is a large wooden building with kitchen, wash rooms and a fully furnished hall. A small generator is provided for electricity supply. The hut is wired for lighting only. For safety reasons please avoid the use of lamps and candles.

Campers Guidelines

Rubbish

It is customary in Scouting for campers to burn all the rubbish on site (It burns quicker if it is placed on the fire grate). Flatten all tins and place with other rubbish in plastic bags.

Pits

Owing to the foxes digging up scraps, we can not allow dug wet and dry pits. Use Wet filters (see Scouting Chart – Plastic in Camp)

Dogs

Due to the disease called TOXOCARIASIS which causes Blindness in children and which is carried by dogs fouling the grass, it is regretted the NO DOGS with the exception of Guide dogs can be allowed on site.

Hygiene

All leaders should be aware of the need to follow safety rules and codes whilst in camp. Many diseases and illness can be contracted if proper hygiene rules are not applied. Many can be contracted through open wounds. It is important that around the site and river, footwear is always worn.
